Calcutta, India, was given kudos by Animal People for the way it controls its street dog population. The efforts are carried out by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation and Compassionate Crusaders Trust. The program operates in public places, including government offices, hospitals, and housing developments. The animals are trapped, fixed and, if healthy, are released back. Sick and injured dogs are taken off the streets. It's an overwhelming effort in a poor community, but the first steps are gaining praise the world over.
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation used to kill stray dogs at the Dhapa Dog Pound (E.M. bypass), before they adopted Animal Birth Control & Anti Rabies (ABC/AR) program in March 1996.                                                     Dogs are killed no more.     Phone : + 91 33 24647030.
